Night is not required to be evil and darkness does not have to contain monsters (even though monsters like to nestle in the dark).
Skulls are mostly freaky because of how and when we see them displayed. It is conditioning. The blood, the sadistic and murderous death-dealers, the misery and screams. But all of this — all of this thinking and perceiving in life — my reception of the adorable and gorgeous — all of this is taken into sugars* and the sugars are digested in my skull. All of my most favored experiences and understandings happen in there, where the scary, sordid, sinister associations with skulls reside.
Darkness is not being able to see, however you write it — see See SEE ”see” comprehend, understand Imagine,
if it is possible, that the Nothing that hounded Sebastian and Atreyu, whatever gray goo actually is(n’t?), entropy — the draining of all possibility — were all as dark as the Origin of all that we call Good — of intimate care, generous provision, pure protection, perfect love.
Hallelujah Ominous Origin. Darkness.
*Yes, it is true, our experiences up there are powered, not actually stored, in sugars.
